Service-based Learning

At Wasatch Academy, service plays a crucial role in teaching our students responsibility, respect, and care for their community whether in dorm life, school life, engagement in the local community, or in a global context.

Through service to others, our students learn more about themselves, and how they want to use their talents and education. Through serving, other students come to embrace an 'us' centered view of the world and move away from selfish, or entitled paradigms. These skills will prepare our students to be active and selfless members of whatever communities they go on to inhabit.

Students participate in service in a variety of settings at Wasatch Academy. They learn to serve their immediate school community through the Co-op system where each student contributes to the up-keep and cleaning of their living spaces and the dining hall. In addition, each weekend, community service trips are organized and range from helping run a community wide food and clothing drive, to raking neighbors' leaves in the fall, or volunteering at a the local food bank or head-start program. Students also have the opportunity to be a part of a community service class for a quarter where they spend up to five hours a week serving in the local community.

Service and thinking of others is emphasized in the Residential Life curriculum. Students gain perspective and understanding that service is something they can do anytime, anywhere.

These service opportunities culminate in the Senior Service Project (SSP), which is a graduation requirement for all of our Seniors completed during their Junior or Senior years which allows them the opportunity to design a specific project, or give back to a specific community in a way that reflects their interests, passions and skills.
