Empowering Young Men and Young Women: A Deeper Look at Our Mission Statement
Wasatch Academy’s mission statement says: “Wasatch Academy provides a nurturing community that empowers young men and women to develop academically, socially and morally, preparing them for college and for the challenges of living in the 21st century.”
That’s a promise we keep. If you look at the different programs and classes we offer, our mission statement is being fulfilled on a daily basis by the promising staff and students who strive to excel within the school. So let’s break down our school’s mission statement and show how serious we are about empowering young men and women everywhere.
A Nurturing Community
What does a nurturing community mean? Wasatch Academy is nestled in the heart of the Wasatch Mountains in Utah, in the small rural town of Mt. Pleasant. Boarding students at Wasatch Academy are embraced by caring and guiding residential-life dorm parents, and by encouraging faculty and staff. Every adult helps teach and nurture each student’s well-being in all aspects of their social, emotional, and academic growth. All dorm parents as members of the residence life faculty hold a degree in either psychology and/or counseling and are thus fully equipped by professional training to manage and guide the students in their care.
Wasatch Academy is in the top 5% of boarding schools in the United States in that it maintains a dedicated residence life faculty whose sole purpose is to attend to the needs of students in the dormitory and to direct the residence life curriculum. All other boarding schools in this country function on the ‘triple threat” model where teachers are expected to teach, coach and run the dormitories themselves, surely an inefficient system by comparison to the one in place at Wasatch Academy where these three aspects of school life are staffed by dedicated professionals. Our model makes for a truly nurturing community where the adults have clearly defined roles and can focus their energies on serving students in that specific capacity.
Wasatch Academy also boasts smaller class sizes, which means that students get more one-on-one attention while allowing for stronger interpersonal bonds among fellow students and teachers. On average, the school enrolls 350 students — much smaller than your average high school.
Empowering Young Men and Women
Wasatch Academy is unique among private boarding schools in Utah in that it is co-ed. A major focus of Wasatch is empowering students in discovering who they are. Private boarding schools should be places that foster creativity; for this reason, we have numerous programs and classes that allow discovery, plus outlets that allow students to express themselves. We have our own recording studio, theater, art studio, and many other options for self expression. A variety of programs within the school help encourage students to expand on what they love.
Building Students Academically, Socially and Morally
Private boarding schools help students excel in all areas — academically, socially and morally. Our smaller class sizes and personalized teaching methods help students excel and achieve the academic progress they desire.
Wasatch Academy does several things to grow students socially. For example, our students are invited to attend school recreation trips on the weekend, such as camping, mountain biking, and ski and snowboarding — this helps students get to know each other while embracing cultural differences. Wasatch Academy hosts a wide variety of students from around the world, which encourages students to understand different cultures and languages. In the long run, these types of cultural experiences give students a leg up both professionally and academically.
Preparing For College and Challenges
Private boarding schools help students smoothly ease into the college transition. At Wasatch Academy, students can choose from the 17 different AP classes that we offer. Our college counselors work diligently with students, preparing them for tests, enrollment applications, and much more – one reason Wasatch Academy can boast a 100 percent acceptance rate for seniors at colleges and universities around the country.
Perhaps most importantly, being away from home and immersed into a diverse community of students from around the world, instills a unique sense of independence in students. With the guide of teachers and dorm parents, students at Wasatch Academy are fully prepared to make a successful step into the college of their dreams.
