At Wasatch Academy, we know that academics and extracurricular activities often have complementary benefits; for example, research indicates that students who engage in extracurricular music activities are more adept at math. It’s not uncommon, however, for students at college prep boarding schools to struggle with finding a balance between academics and extracurricular activities. At Wasatch Academy, we know the benefits of a symbiotic relationship between these two areas — which is why we place an emphasis on teaching our students how to effectively balance both.
Time Management Translates to Success
Time management is one of the core principles we impart on our students; we believe that effectively managing time between work and leisure is a key element of future success. For students to thrive while studying at college prep boarding schools and post-graduation, it’s imperative that they understand the key role of effective time management. We teach students how to develop a schedule, how to prioritize activities and how to plan for unexpected events and emergencies. The ability to prioritize time will translate to future success — specifically within the college spectrum.
What’s Necessary — and What’s Not
We know that it’s beneficial for students to try new activities that they normally wouldn’t engage in — in fact, we actually encourage it, because college prep boarding schools are the ideal places to branch out and be adventurous. However, once a student has decided which activities he or she wants to pursue, it’s necessary to eliminate activities that he or she is less passionate about. Although it’s possible to be captain of the rodeo team, president of the debate team, a student ambassador, the star of the school play, golf team member and a cheerleader while taking seven AP classes, at some point it’s critical to narrow down which of these activities deserve the majority of your time — versus which activities are simply fillers.
