This weekend, the Independent boys basketball team will travel to Las Vegas to defend their title in the Legacy Tipoff Classic.
The Tigers open at 8:15 p.m. Thursday against Faith Lutheran High School of Las Vegas, which boasts a frontline of a 6’7“ center and two 6’6” forwards. The Crusaders won their first game of the season on Tuesday, defeating Virgin Valley of Mesquite, Nev., 62–42.
The Tigers will play four games total, with one game on Thursday and Friday and two games on Saturday. Download a PDF bracket here that includes times. All games are played at Legacy High School, 150 W. Deer Springs Way.
Wasatch Academy won the Financial Bracket of this tournament last year and Koby McEwan earned MVP honors. But this year’s tournament has a stronger field, with local teams such as Centennial High School (with two Division 1 signees and one top prospect) and Clark High School, as well as Villa Park out of California.
This tournament will provide a solid barometer of the Tigers’ growth in the early weeks of the season. Beginning next week, Wasatch Academy will need to be fully developed as a team. Between Dec. 11 and Dec. 17, they will face the #1 team in Utah, the #1 and #3 teams in Colorado, and the #3 team in the country. More on that later.
