Maria “Duda” Alcantara Signs Historic Women’s Basketball Scholarship
A first-ever for Wasatch Academy, their girl’s basketball champion, Maria Alcantara has been offered a full-ride college scholarship, to play with Highland Community College in Kansas. Her historic signing of the letter of intent marks a great achievement for Maria, who has accomplished much during her studies at the international boarding school located in Mt. Pleasant, Utah.
Maria will begin playing basketball with the Highland Scotties coming this Fall, 2016. The Scotties are a Top-10 nationally ranked team and back-to-back Region VI Champions, as well as runner-up in the NJCAA National Tournament.
Maria says the following about reaching her basketball goals: “At Wasatch Academy I realized that nothing will ever come without hard work. And more than that, I learned how to put effort in and set goals so I can conquer my dreams. In academics, in basketball, in social life, we all have our ups and downs, and being away from home made me independent about this. I have to deal with my own problems. Because of hard work and newfound maturity I am able to continue my education and basketball career.”
Coach Coke Whitworth commented how energized the entire girl’s basketball team has become with Maria’s scholarship. It has given upcoming freshmen through senior’s new aspirations for their own achievements.
