In late October, high schoolers from 29 different schools arrived at Brigham Young University ready to compete in a mock United Nations session.
The Wasatch Academy Model United Nations (MUN) team brought home multiple awards including four position papers awards, two for Australia (Joey Ye and Miu Someya/Rokiatou Diop) and two for Peru (Angelica Varillas/Lucy Zhai and Ines Schmid-Lopez/Emanuel Garcia Flores). The MUN team also received two peer awards for Peru in Security Council (Lavi Tuineau/Nil Sipal) and Organization of American States (Ines Schmid-Lopez/Emanuel Garcia Flores). The crowning achievement for the event was as an Honorable Mention award for the whole Delegation of Peru. Coach and Wasatch Academy Social Studies teacher, Josh McAlister states, “The team has improved in its research skills and writing of ideas, but is working on being more aggressive in promoting their ideas to the group.”
The Wasatch Academy MUN team has accepted an invitation to attend the Harvard MUN competition January 24-27, 2019. Wasatch Academy will have 14 delegates going on this trip representing Israel at the General Assembly (GA) and the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) on the International Monetary Fund (IMF) committee. The IMF committee is discussing Universal Basic Income (UBI), a hot topic since the inception of the concept in Finland and Kenya that has garnered global attention with several governmental entities.
