As educational institutions across the country, from private boarding schools to public high schools, seem all-to-eager to cut funding for music and arts programs, Wasatch Academy stands above as a proud supporter of the arts. With 10 different music courses from which to choose, in addition to ensemble groups and individual practice instruction, Wasatch Academy offers its students an unrivaled opportunity to participate in music.
Though Wasatch Academy’s music courses have long filled the institution’s storied halls with rhythm and harmony, the recent addition of the Music Conservatory building has only added to the students’ music education opportunities. This new state-of-the-art building features professional-quality acoustics, soundproof practice rooms, lockers for the student’s instruments, an upright piano, several Kawai electric keyboards and corresponding computer equipment, a classical organ, and a fully functional recording studio — amenities not often found in your average private boarding schools.
In the Music Conservatory building, students of all different ability levels can participate in music. Students who are new to music can take courses in Introduction to Music, Music Theory & Music Composition, and Piano Fundamentals. Students taking Piano Fundamentals, Intermediate Piano or Advanced Piano practice their skills in the Piano Marvel Lab, a soundproof classroom that pairs piano students with a program called Piano Marvel, helping students to improve their technique, ear training and performance.
In addition to piano and introductory music courses, students can take classes in Guitar, Jazz Combo and Classical and Fusion Ensemble. The Wasatch Academy music program also offers a number of extracurricular music opportunities, and students can join together to form practice groups, bands and ensembles. Music students can choose to perform in national or regional competitions, and showcase their music performance among private boarding schools and other high schools across the country.
With its state-of-the-art facilities and passionate faculty, the Wasatch Academy music program teaches students not only to learn music, but to have fun with it. If that’s not what music is all about, we don’t know what is.
