The 2018 National Honor Society (NHS) Induction Ceremony for new members took place on November 7 at Magleby’s Restaurant in Springville, Utah. NHS is the nation’s oldest, largest, and most prestigious student recognition program, and it is upheld by the four pillars of scholarship, leadership, character, and service. Thirteen returning members of NHS and thirteen new members were present, along with Alyssa Wolf (Faculty advisor for NHS), Joseph Loftin (Head of School), Amie and Steve Mondragon (Dean of Girls and Dean of Boys), and parents of some new members. It was a lovely evening that began with a delicious dinner and culminated in a candle ceremony. Each of the new members had their candles lit by a returning member of NHS. One student, Jadon Bucklin, had his candle lit by a Wasatch Academy faculty member, Todd Bucklin, who also happens to be Jadon’s father. That particular candle-lighting was a touching event! One new NHS chapter member, David Cottam, was preceded in previous years by a number of his siblings. David follows two of his older sisters and two of his older brothers (all WA graduates) as a member of the National Honor Society.
The complete list of new NHS members who have now been inducted into the Wasatch Academy Chapter is as follows: Jadon Bucklin, David Cottam, Tenzin Dhesel, Ami Konoike, Paisley Mae Lott, Brian Lyu, Hoang Nhat Nguyen, Izumi Robertson, Giulia Stocchino, Avery Wade, Yihan “Max” Yu, Lucy Zhai, and Arina Zheng. Congratulations to all of the new members of NHS for the hard work and dedication that have brought you to this moment of recognition and the threshold of new opportunities.
NHS will be involved in several excellent service projects in the coming weeks. One will be a visit with the residents of Autumn Park, an assisted living home in Mt. Pleasant. Another will be to rake faculty lawns. NHS students can always be counted on to engage fully with these kinds of community-building service activities, and the new members will certainly contribute their time and energy in a stellar fashion, both now and in the future.
