Nearly thirty alumni and friends gathered on a rainy Seattle evening at Copperworks Distilling Company to kick off the first regional alumni gathering of the school year. Alumni chairs Klindt Parker ’79 and Hilary (Stevens) Yeoham ’09 helped bring together alumni ranging from the class of 1969 to the class of 2016 and their family members.
The night featured storytelling, reminiscing, laughter, networking, and distillery tours. Donna Tegnell ’81 remarked several times throughout the night that she could not believe how much she learned about the distilling process during the distillery tour. Alex Carrabba ’12 echoed the same sentiment after the tour of the award-winning distillery headed up by one of the Copperworks distillers. In addition to tours, Head of School Joseph Loftin gave a heartfelt speech about the enduring legacy of Wasatch Academy. His speech had many alumni nodding their heads in agreement as he talked about diversity and the sense of belonging fostered at Wasatch Academy. Director of Philanthropy Dusty Heist-Levine talked about the new 1875 Club at Wasatch Academy, a club for sustaining donors to the school.
The biggest highlight from the evening was not a speech but watching alumni from various eras connecting and bonding. While the school has certainly changed throughout the decades, Wasatch Academy alumni all share a unique experience. This experience bonds all Wasatch Academy alumni together, no matter their graduation year. Many alumni talked about the resilience they learned at Wasatch Academy and how it has helped them in their adult lives and careers.
As Ray Robinson ’69 wrote after the event in the Wasatch Academy Alumni Facebook group, “[It was] so good to see those I know and [meet] more members of our tribe.” Classmates Ocean Murphy and Nate Merrill, both from the Class of 2011, said the event brought them together for the first time since graduation. Other alumni met for the first time, making new friendships while others were reforging old bonds.
Overall, the event was a great start to our regional gatherings, both domestic and international. The next stop on the Wasatch Academy Alumni Regional Gathering tour is in San Francisco on November 6 at the St. Francis Yacht Club.
