Lucas Hafner, a sophomore from Germany, defeated opponents from three state powerhouses to claim the #2 singles state title. Hafner defeated rival Manti player Davis Hardy 6-3, 6-1 in the finals to win the title. To reach the final, he defeated Shravan Ramayanapu of Waterford 6-2, 6-4 and Ishaan Kishnan of Rowland Hall (6-2, 6-1).
At the #1 Singles position Lucas Nguyen (Vietnam, pictured) won his quarterfinal match vs Summit Academy in a 3-set thriller: 6-4, 2-6, and super-tiebreaker 10-5. He then lost to theWaterford junior Quinn Pritchett, the eventual champion, 6-0, 6-4.
At #3 Singles Hoang Nguyen (Vietnam) won easily against his Ian Armstrong of St. Joseph (6-2, 6-2) in the quarterfinals. But he was stopped in the semis by Christian Heath, the eventual champion from Waterford, 6-4, 6-1.
In team competition the WA Tigers finished 4th in the state with 7 overall points behind Waterford (14 points), Grand (12), and just behind local rival Manti (8). This is a testament to the growing strength of Utah’s 2A South Region where both Boys and Girls Tennis now resides.
