As a society, we hold great value in a high school diploma. It’s a ticket of admittance into the world of higher education. It’s recognized as a tremendous personal achievement. It’s the “cherry on top.” But what is it that we truly value within an educational experience? When all is said and done, the real value is found in the community and camaraderie that support us through this experience. That is precisely what the Class of 2019 accomplished.
Joe Loftin recognized this year’s graduating class with great reverence, “You lived the Wasatch Academy core values of respect and community in your service to the school, your collaboration on classroom projects, and your leadership in school activities. Shaping an environment where students were accepted for their differences. Everyone’s voice mattered.” Mr. Loftin understands the importance that friendship holds in our community and reminds us of what things hold real value in our day-to-day lives.
Student speaker Karuna Loftin admitted, “Life as a student is eventful.” And she would know having grown up on campus. She encouraged her underclassmen to find the value in the community she so cherished, “Get involved, even if it’s scary. And please appreciate and take advantage of the support you get here. The community support is what makes Wasatch Academy stand apart.”
During the ceremony, commencement speaker, Lt. Governor Spencer Cox, reminded us, “When we give back to our community because we have the social capital to do that, everyone benefits. We benefit from each other. We all take part in being a solid foundation to those around us. Allowing each other to grow in more ways than one.”
Joseph Loftin closed the ceremony remarking, “As you build new relationships in the world, wherever you end up, remember to be a strong foundation for those around you. Take with you the community values you learned here. Understand that personal value is as important as academic value. That is what a proud Tiger exemplifies. All of us here at Wasatch Academy are proud of you. To the outstanding Class of 2019, best of luck in your future!”
