Led by Region 15 champion Devin Mesquite, four runners from Wasatch Academy traveled to Salt Lake City for the state cross country championship on Wednesday, Oct. 22.
Once again, Mesquite led the team as the only Tiger runner to medal as he finished in 7th place with a time of 16:43. The top two runners ran faster than expected and finished — in dramatic fashion, as winner Jonathan Rothschild of North Summit won the final sprint — at least 15 seconds ahead of the other top 10 medalists.
The other male qualifier from Wasatch Academy, Kurik Tanner, finished in 32nd place and recorded a personal best time of 18:20. Considering the difficulty of the hilly Sugarhouse Park course, that’s an impressive feat.
The two female runners, Miriam Galecki and Caity Howard, finished 27th and 28th. The two runners were separated by four seconds, with respective times of 22:38 and 22:42.
All four runners are expected to return next year. The team will also have Nouman Kante, who was leading the boys squad before he suffered a season-ending injury two weeks ago, back next year.
