Sports & Recreation

Established in 1875, Wasatch Academy is home to one of the nation’s oldest high school athletic programs. Harnessing the power of sport as a unifying force, we're committed to helping our student-athletes reach their greatest potential.

The goal of our athletic program is to promote the education and development of students through sport and outdoor recreation participation. Lifelong learning experiences include the values of teamwork, sportsmanship, respect, integrity, discipline, positivity, and commitment.

ATHLETICS

  • BOYS & GIRLS: November → February

    Boys 2A Varsity and JV Teams

    • Both teams are independent members of the Utah High School Activities Association.

    • Daily practice plus extra weekend training

    • 2-3 weekly practices during the regular season

    Boys Orange/Black Team

    • Competes as a varsity basketball team in the Utah Schools Sports Association.

    • 2-3 games weekly practices during the regular season

    • State Tournament in March, with seeding determined by divisional record and the USSA Tournament Committee.

    Girls Varsity and JV Teams

    • Competes in the 2A division of the Utah High School Activities Association.

    • Daily practice plus some optional weekend skill development available.

    • Seeding for the State Tournament is determined by RPI rankings through the UHSAA.

    National Team

    Member of the National Interscholastic Basketball Conference (NIBC) as well as an independent member of the Utah High School Activities Association (UHSAA).

  • The Western and English equestrian program provides riders and newcomers the perfect degree of training and guidance tailored to their interests and needs. The facilities include an indoor arena, outdoor arena, a three-mile cross country course, 20-stall stable, paddocks, and over 100 acres of open pasture.

  • Equipped with a rock wall and bouldering room on campus and a world-class rock climbing destination located 20 minutes from campus, novice to experienced climbers are sure to reach new heights. Instructors support students in understanding safety, movement techniques, and various disciplines within rock climbing.

  • BOYS & GIRLS: November → February

    • Not affiliated with a Utah state association.

    • Practice 3-5 days per week.

    • Events include performances, fan motivation, and student-body unity at sporting events.

  • BOYS: August → October
    GIRLS: March → May

    • Both teams compete in the 2A division of the Utah High School Activities Association (UHSAA).

    • Up to two 18-hole tournaments per week (boys and girls).

    • Region tournaments in September (boys) and May (girls) serve as State tournament seeding qualifiers.

  • Flexible and individualized, Wasatch Academy offers recreational and beginner skiing and snowboarding programs designed for students of all skill levels.

    • Both teams compete in the 1A-3A division of the Utah High School Activities Association (UHSAA).

    • Practices daily on the Tennis Courts or in the Field House during wet weather.

    • 1-3 competitions per week for each team.

    • Region tournaments in September (girls) and May (boys) cap the regular season.

    • State Tournament seeding is determined by RPI ranking through the UHSAA, which is dependent on individual records.

  • GIRLS & BOYS: August → October

    • Both teams compete in the 2A division of the Utah High School Activities Association (UHSAA).

    • Beginning with the start of the school year, workouts are strongly encouraged to build up speed and endurance before official daily practices begin.

    • 1-2 races per week; Race distance is 3 miles.

    • Region meet caps regular season and serves as the State meet qualifier; Both teams and individuals can earn state berths.

  • For those excited to experience Utah's scenery, mountain biking and hiking are ideal activities. Often our students go to the red rock arches in Moab or hike plateaus and tunnels of Zion National Park. There are several mountain biking and hiking trails for students to explore beautiful landscapes locally while developing technical riding and hiking skills.

  • BOYS & GIRLS: March → May

    • Boys team competes in the 2A Division of the Utah High School Activities Association (UHSAA).

    • State Tournament seeding is determined by RPI ranking through the UHSAA.

    • Girls team is a member of the Utah Schools Sports Association (USSA).

    • Practice begins in early March and competitions begin mid-March (or usually after the Wasatch Academy Spring Break).

    • Indoor or outdoor daily training, dependent on weather.

    • Regular season games run through the end of April; State Tournament is scheduled for the first week of May.

  • GIRLS & BOYS: March → May

    • Competes in the 2A Division of the Utah High School Activities Association (UHSAA).

    • Practices begin on the Wasatch Academy indoor track but move to the North Sanpete outdoor track as soon as weather permits.

    • Regular season invitationals followed by a Region meet at the end of the season.

    • State Meet qualifiers determined by event times at sanctioned events and placement at the Region meet.

  • BOYS & GIRLS: November → February

    The Wasatch Academy Swim Team is coed for the daily practices at the Wasatch Academy/Mount Pleasant City Pool. Competition is divided by event and gender. Swimmers can expect an average of one competition per week with a Region competition at the terminus of the season. The Swim Team competes in the 1A-3A Division of the Utah High School Activities Association (UHSAA). Seeding for the state meet is determined by Region competition as well as event times during the regular season.

  • BOYS & GIRLS: March → May

    GIRLS

    • Girls team is a member of the Utah Schools Sports Association (USSA).

    • Practice begins in early March and competitions begin mid-March.

    • Indoor or outdoor daily training, depending on weather.

    • State Tournament is scheduled for the first week of May.

    BOYS

    • Boys team competes in the 2A Division of the Utah High School Activities Association (UHSAA).

    • State Tournament seeding is determined by RPI ranking through the UHSAA and starts in May.

    • Practice begins in early March and competitions begin mid-March.

    • Indoor or outdoor daily training, depending on weather.

National Team

The Wasatch Academy Varsity National Basketball team is one of the top programs in the U.S. The team competes in the National Interscholastic Basketball Conference (NIBC) and in regional and national tournaments. Our players consistently go on to compete for D1 and international programs.

Snowsports Program

Flexible and individualized, our skiing and snowboarding program offers competitive, recreational, and beginner programs designed for students of all expertise to enjoy the slopes. Disciplines within the competitive program include slope-style, half-pipe, and big mountain. Our noncompetitive program provides students with opportunities for plenty of snow experience.

Equestrian Program

Experienced riders and curious newcomers alike will find the perfect degree of training and guidance tailored to their interests and needs in the Wasatch Academy equestrian program.Wasatch Academy has exceptional coaches to help riders develop their English or Western skills under the instruction of current and former rodeo and English competitive champions.
