Performing Arts

Performing Arts at Wasatch Academy is a welcoming program for both new and experienced  musical artists. Exploratory courses provide students with opportunities to discover their curiosities and talents across a variety of forms and genres. Students learn and practice techniques in preparation for solo and ensemble repertoires. Developing musicians and vocalists choose from highly adaptive courses designed to cultivate confident performers.

Courses

  • Duration: 1 trimester

    This class uses a mixture of collaborative group learning and private instruction to introduce basic guitar technique, chords, rhythms, scales, theory, improvisation, and reading musical notation, through a diversity of musical styles, including blues, rock, folk/traditional, and classical. Students can enroll in the course more than once, further exploring guitar topics, including an expanded repertoire of chords and scales, a deeper understanding of theory, more complex playing techniques, and more challenging repertoire.

  • Duration: 1 trimester

    Exploratory Music Theory focuses on the study of notation, scales, key signatures, intervals, triads, form, and ear training. This course is highly recommended for students in a musical ensemble.

  • Duration: 1 trimester

    Exploratory Orchestra is designed to meet the needs of all musicians interested or already skilled in playing violin, viola, cello, or double bass. Students study solo and ensemble repertoire, as well as fundamentals of technique, position, tone quality, and reading

  • Duration: 1 trimester

    Exploratory Piano is open to students of all levels and experience. It focuses on foundational principles in technique and understanding. Beginners explore theory, technique, note reading, finger patterns, familiarity with a keyboard and the ability to play with others. Advanced players work on personal development as well as performance and ensemble skills.

  • Guitar begins with fundamentals, and progresses by the end of the year to more intermediate topics, where students learn technique, chords, rhythms, scales, theory, reading, and songs, in groups and individually, and in a variety of styles.

  • This class is designed for students with some prior experience playing a modern or electronic instrument. Students form small ensembles, choose or write level appropriate songs in consultation with the instructor, and rehearse these songs as a group during each session.

  • Orchestra offers group instruction for experienced students as well as students new to the violin, viola, cello, and double bass. Students focus on the skills necessary for long-term success and perform as a group multiple times a trimester. Fundamentals stressed include proper position and posture, development of characteristic tone quality, and training in music literacy.

  • This class is open to all piano students regardless of level or experience, and focuses on piano basics, such as sight reading, theory, ear-training, memorization, technique, and performance. Each student works individually and with others in playing duets and ensembles. Performance is encouraged for all students.

  • Vocal Ensemble explores choral and vocal ensemble music from a wide variety of cultures and time periods through study and performance, with emphasis on the basics of vocal technique, healthy singing, proper diction, music theory and music history.

  • Wasatch Academy offers a unique opportunity for students to participate in student-driven projects using the principles and skills of both theater and film as well as other forms of media. These projects are aligned with the Humanities, providing an experiential learning opportunity for students, and can be tailored to suit all levels of experience and interest. Exhibitions and performances will be held each trimester.
